India vs Pakistan clashes often dubbed as a mother of all cricket battles, even bigger than Ashes. The kind of excitement it generates is something one needs to see to feel it. However, the rivalry is now confined to only multi-nation tournaments. Bilateral series between the two nations are frozen for years now and there seems to be no breakthrough any time soon.
There have been efforts particularly from Pakistan side for the resumption of series but the green signal from India is still awaited and it can't be expected any time soon. Team India former opener Gautam Gambhir feels there should be one uniform rule when it comes to playing Pakistan. He says, "If you want to ban someone from playing, you should ban them from playing every form of cricket, whether its Asia Cup or ICC events. You can't have conditional bans in sports.
Talking to a website, Gambhir said, "If you want to play Pakistan in Asia Cup, why don't you play bilateral series as well? If you don't want to play Pakistan in bilateral series, then don't play them in Asia Cup and ICC event either. that's a decision the BCCI and Government need to make." Since January 2013, India and Pakistan have played no bilateral series. But the two teams have clashed since then in the 2013 ICC Championship Trophy, 2014 Asia Cup, 2015 ICC ODI World Cup and twice at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
On today's clash between the two traditional rivals in Asia Cup, Gambhir said, " From the game's point of view I am looking forward to it but I don't get too emotional about the fact that it's a match vs Pakistan. Ultimately, It's a game of cricket that India wants to win. You want to beat every opposition possible because it's a matter of pride for your country. i think it will be a good game because Pakistan is a decent side."
